Mixed media pääkallo / Mixed media skull

Tiedän, että Halloween on ohi - vai onko?! Voisin askarrella Halloween-aiheisia juttuja ympäri vuoden. :) Tämän pääkallon tein juuri ennen Halloween-juhlia. Se on ensimmäinen 3D mixed media -työni.

I know Halloween is over - or is it ?! I would like to craft Halloween-themed stuff throughout the year. :) This skull I made just before our Halloween party. It's my first 3D mixed media work.

Pääkallon päähän tuli kasa erilaisia koristeita: nappeja, kukkia, helmiä, metallikoristeita (ostettuja ja löytyneitä), pullonkorkki ja laboratoriosta tutumpia materiaaleja kuten pipetinkärkiä, koeputki ja pH-paperin suikaleita. Numero 2 on setistä, jonka löysin toimistotarvikehyllyn perältä. :)

I decorated the head of the skull with a variety of embellishments: buttons, flowers, beads, metal ornaments (purchased and found), a bottle cap and materials more common in the lab such as pipette tips, a test tube and a few pH paper strips. The number 2 is from a set, which I found in the back corner of the office supplies shelf. There were old letters and numbers, which were used to name rooms in the university. Today the doors have stickers, so those these were no longer needed at work. They got a second life in my crafting! :)

I sprayed paint (bit of orange, but mostly black) through a spray bottle underneath the decorations (and a bit on top) and allowed it to drip. When it dried, I painted orange on top with a small sponge.

Toiselle puoelle suihkautin punaista maalia ja iskin vanhan ruostuneen naulan paperikerroksen läpi.

To the other side I sprayed red paint and struck an old rusty nail through the paper layer.

Silmien ympärille maalasin kukkaset Day of the Dead -tyyliin. Reunoja on hieman kullattu Inka Goldilla. Hampaat piirsin tussilla.

Around the eyes I painted flowers a bit in the style of The Day of the Dead. The edges are slightly golded Inka Gold. The teeth I drew with a marker.

Sisäpuolelta kallo näytti tältä.

From the inside the skull looks like this.

How did I make this then? I googled a variety of instructions, but then I decided to I use something as a model for the skull. A plastic skull would have been the best, because then I could glue the paper directly on it. I used this plaster skull, which I had to protect (as a precaution) with several layers of cling film.

Menin laskuissa sekaisin eli kerroksia on 4-6. Luin vinkkinä yhdeltä sivulta (täältä, nämä paperimassakallon on niin makeen näköisiä!), että joka kerroksessa kannattaa käyttää hieman eri paperia, jolloin kerrokset on helpompi erottaa. Annoin kallon kuivua yö yli, jonka jälkeen leikkasin paperikerroksen kahtia ja irrotin kallon puoliskot mallista. Teippasin kallot alapuolelta taas yhteen ja levitin viimeisen paperipalakerroksen gessolla, jolloin sain kaksi kärpästä yhdellä iskulla: kallo takaisin kokonaiseksi ja samalla valkoiseksi. Ja sitten aloin koristelemaan sitä.

Unohdin ottaa vaihekuvia matkan varrella, mutta vaiheet eivät olleet kovin hankalia. Itselleni tämä oli jokseenkin tuttua koulun kuvantaitotunneilta. :) Aion tehdä ensi vuodeksi toisen - ehkä enemmän Day of the Dead -tyylisen tällä kertaa - ja ehkä eri mallilla. Koska jouduin suojaamaan tämän niin hyvin, kallon piirteet eivät tulleet samalla tavalla esille. Olen kyllä tyytyväinen ensimmäiseksi mixed media -paperimassatyöksi! Tämä päätyi Halloween-juhlien ruokapöydän koristeeksi.

Mallikallon päässä on muuten tekemäni lepakkohiuspanta. Sain idean Martha Stewartin sivulta (täältä). Tein mustien kartonkilepakoiden lisäksi myös pari oranssia.

Laitan seuraavaksi muutamia kuvia Halloween-juhlista!

I made the "glue paste" by combining liquid glue and water. Since the ratio didn't go quite correctly (there should be significantly less water than glue) I added a bit gesso, so that it became less fluid - and white. Then I glued ripped newspaper pieces
with this paste on the cling filmed skull. I got a bit mixed up with counting the layers, but I think I had 4-6 of them. I read a good tip on one side (here, these paper mache skull look so cool!) that it's worth to use different paper with each layer to make distinguish the layers more easily. The skull dried overnight, after which I cut the paper layer in half and detached them from the model. I taped the two pieces together from underneath and spread the last layer of gesso and paper to get the skull back as a whole and at the same time white. Then I started to decorate it.I forgot to take pictures from the step along the way, but the steps were not very cart classes. :) I'm going to make another one for next year - perhaps something more in the style of The Day of the Dead - and maybe with a different model. Since I had to protect the plaster skull quite well, the skull features didn't come out in the same way. Althoughas a centerpiece on the dining table in the Halloween party.

In the picture the plaster skull ha a bat headband I made. I got the idea from Martha Stewart website (here). I made two orange bats in the addition to the black cardboard bats.I'll post some pictures of our Halloween party next!
